Testify looked a terrific prospect as he saw off Lake View Lad in desperate ground in the Grade Two Altcar Novices’ Chase at Haydock.

There was another desperately poor turn-out for a Graded novice chase, with only three runners for this 2 ½ mile contest.

The field was soon reduced to two, as Positively Dylan crashed out in the early stages.

Lake View Lad led Testify into the home straight on the first circuit, with the loose horse threatening to interfere with the two remaining runners.

The pair continued in the same order, but Testify jumped the last fence down the back better and edged upsides Lake View Lad.

Three out, Testify narrowly led and on the long run to two from home, Lake View Lad came under pressure.

Testify took the second last clear of Lake View Lad who looked weary and a good leap at the last made it three from three for this promising Donald McCain gelding in the Trevor Hemmings silks.

“We were on a hiding to nothing, but he’s doing nothing wrong. He’ll be entered in the JLT and the RSA next week,” said McCain.

“He doesn’t move like he must have soft ground, but he obviously handles it well.

“I was surprised he had the pace to win over two miles earlier in the season.”
