Barney Dwan picked up the pieces after his two main rivals both capitulated in the bet365 Scottish Future Champions Novices’ Chase at Musselburgh.

Five lined-up for an intriguing contest over just short of 2 ½ miles.

At the off it was Alzammaar who led from Keeper Hill and Barney Dwan.

The pace was fairly sedate and Barney Dwan all but joined the leader at the fourth fence, with Keeper Hill, Peter The Mayo Man and Martiloo all in close proximity.

Racing down the home straight, very little separated the front three, with Alzammaar still just holding the lead at the seventh, from Barney Dwan.

With a circuit to run, Keeper Hill inched into the lead, with five lengths covering the quintet.

With eleven jumped, Keeper Hill just shaded Barney Dwan, with the other three stalking this pair, although Peter The Mayo Man had made a few mistakes.

The front pair began to turn for home, with four left to jump.

Keeper Hill and Barney Dwan were joined by Peter The Mayo Man, but drama ensued four out as Keeper Hill and Peter The Mayo Man fell independently, leav ing Barney Dwan clear of Martiloo.

Barney Dwan jumped the last well clear, with Alzammaar running on well for second, ahead of Martiloo. Both fallers were up OK.

The Fergal O’Brien trained Barney Dwan had been a useful hurdler and was making it twp cpmsecutive wins over fences.
