Racegoers at Warwick gathered to see the chasing debut of Thomas Darby – but were left contemplating the star qualities of the improving mare Maire Banrigh.

Five horses lined-up for this novice chase, run over fractionally further than two miles, with all eyes on the Olly Murphy-trained Supreme Novices’ Hurdle runner-up.

But from the off, Harry Skelton sent the mare Maire Banrigh into the lead, with Thomas Darby keeping tabs on her in second throughout.

Into the home straight, the pair had the race between them and it was the race-fit mare, seeking a four-timer – and with a previous victory over fences, who found  more.

Both horses jumped well throughout and a fine leap at the last was enough for the Dan Skelton-trained Maire Banrigh, who held on by a length.
