Thomas Hobson did it the hard way and had to overcome a late error to win the Group Three Grimes Hurdle at Tipperary.

A field of five went to post for this two mile contest.

Tombstone went into the early lead, with Thomas Hobson and Plinth, with this trio soon clear of Band Of Outlaws and Like An Open Book.

Tombstone was soon joined by Thomas Hobson and the latter went into the lead as they entered the home straight on the first occasion.

Heading out with a circuit to race, Thomas Hobson and Paul Townend pressed on and moved four lengths clear.

At the last down the back, the lead was still four lengths from Tombstone, with Plinth coming under pressure, while Band Of Outlaws and Like An Open Book has closed up.

Thomas Hobson turned for home in front but made an error at the second last, as Band Of Outlaws came to challenge.

The leader jumped well at the last and kept up the gallop and while the four year-old Band Of Outlaws closed, Thomas Hobson just held on.

Willie Mullins will have been delighted with this performance, as Thomas Hobson, last seen at Royal Ascot, returned to hurdles in some style.
