Giuseppe Garibaldi impresses in the King George V Cup

Giuseppe Garibaldi ran out a convincing winner of the Listed King George V Cup at Leopardstown.

Just the five horses went to post for this 1 ½ mile contest.

At the break it was Burgundy Boy who led but was passed to the inside, by Lucius Tiberius.

Settling down, Lucius Tiberius held a slender lead from a relatively bunched field.

With a mile to race, Carlo Biraghi went on into a half length lead.

Leaving the back straight, the once-raced Carlo Biraghi was joined to his inner by Lucius Tiberius, with Burgundy Boy close-up and then Giuseppe Garilbaldi.

Turning for home, Lucius Tiberius travelled better than Carlo Biraghi, who faded. But Giuseppe Garibaldi swept through into the lead and took three lengths out of the field.

Late on Cimeara gave chase and closed to within a couple of lengths, but the Donnacha O’Brien ridden Giuseppe Garibaldi, a son of Galileo, was comfortably the best here.

The Aidan O’Brien trained colt took five starts to get off the mark, but significantly, his four defeats all came on ground with give. He looks to have learnt plenty and revels on better summer ground.
