Race-fit Apple’s Jade gave a rusty Nichols Canyon no mercy as she stormed to a second victory in the Grade One Bar One Racing Hatton’s Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse.
Seven went to post for this 2 ½ mile contest remembering one of the great Irish trained hurdlers.
The big two Apple’s Jade and Nichols Canyon were soon to the fore, with the mare holding a length lead from the reigning Staying Hurdle champion, making his seasonal return.
With a circuit to run, Apple’s Jade continued to lead Nichols Canyon, with Swamp Fox and Cilaos Emery next, as the front sextet bunched up and Augusta Kate raced a couple of lengths off the back.
The race continued to look wide open with all seven in contention at the third last flight.
Apple’s Jade took them into the home straight with Nichols Canyon to her outer and they began to pull clear.
The long-time leader stumbled a little on landing at the second last, but as Nichols Canyon began to tire, Apple’s Jade extended her advantage.
A slick jump at the last sealed back-to-back victories in the Hatton’s Grace in brilliant style and she passed the post well clear of Nichols Canyon, with Supasundae inching into third place from Cilaos Emery.
The victory of Apple’s Jades gave Gigginstown House Stud, Gordon Elliott and Jack Kennedy a Grade One double after Mengli Khan’s earlier success.
