The Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe was honoured with the 2017 Longines World’s Best Horse Race award at a sumptuous ceremony in London on Tuesday, 23 January. The inaugural winner of this award in 2015, the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe has won this prestigious award for the second time.
The Longines World’s Best Horse Race award recognises the best-rated race of the highest- rated Group 1 International races, as established for the year by a panel of international handicappers, from a selection of 405 international Group 1 races that are run each year around the world.
The ratings of the top four finishers serve as a basis for the assessment. This global rating is based on the IFHA (International Federation of Horseracing Authorities) classification.
Edouard de Rothschild, the President of France Galop, declared: “The Arc has long been a barometer for the best horses in the world. Winning the Longines World’s Best Horse Race award for the second time in three years highlights the level of excellence we are trying to achieve with our premier race. Enable won the hearts of many with her victory at Chantilly, and hopefully she will line up at the new Paris Longchamp this autumn to defend her title.”
For Nasser Sherida Al Kaabi, General Manager of QREC, “It is immensely satisfying to see the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe honoured as the 2017 Longines World’s Best Horse Race, especially as it was also celebrated as the inaugural winner in 2015. Our partnerships with France Galop and Longines are valuable to us. This recognition validates our efforts to be associated with the best the world of horse racing has to offer, especially as equestrian sport has long been a passion and a point of pride for Qataris.”
The Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe showcases French racing
Since its creation in 1920, the « Arc » has been recognised as one of the biggest sporting challenges in the world. The world’s best thoroughbreds, ridden by the best jockeys, come to France for this mythical race!
Thanks to prize-money of 5 Million Euros, which makes it one of the richest events of the sport, the winner will become a legend. A winner of the Arc is extremely valuable at stud as he will ensure the improvement of the breed.
2018: a historic Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe
For the last two years the Arc was run at the Chantilly racecourse, but in 2018 the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe returns to ParisLongchamp, which has been completely refurbished.
Connections of Enable, who lifted the 2017 edition of the Arc, are looking not only for a double, but are hoping to write themselves into the history books as the filly could become the only filly in the history of the Arc to win the race at two different racecourses! It’s a challenge that is not going to scare her jockey Frankie Dettori, the only jockey to have won this event five times.
