Roger Varian is set to tread a familiar pathway as Defoe will bid to follow in the footsteps of illustrious former stable mate Postponed, at Meydan, in March.

Postponed got better with age and landed the Group Two City of Gold Stakes before adding the Dubai Sheema Classic on World Cup Night.

The popular grey Defoe, now a six-year-old, has similarly improved with age, enjoying his best campaign to date, last year, when landing the Group One Coronation Cup at Epsom and the Group Two Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Defoe’s trip to Meydan will be his first venture outside of Europe and he will be travelling alone, following the news that the stable’s Zabeel prince has suffered a setback.

Varian told The Racing Post: “Defoe hasn’t run for a while but it was always the plan to target him at the Sheema Classic and hopefully we can run him in the City of Gold as a trial before that. We won both races with Postponed four years ago.”
