A Group 1 update helped propel the highest price on day three of the October Yearling Sale close to record levels and was exemplary of figures generally holding steady. Over the catalogue’s two-day Part II, the average price rose 1.5% from last year’s renewal to reach €30,335 and the clearance rate almost held up at 79%, while a slightly smaller catalogue resulted in the aggregate losing 10%.

Lily’s sister, Griezmann’s goal

Elevage de Tourgeville’s daughter of American Post out of Golden Lily (lot 436) enjoyed one of the most significant updates in the sale when her year-older half-sister LILY’S CANDLE, a Listed winner when the catalogue went to press, took the Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac by storm, less than 24h after having been purchased by Martin Schwartz at the Arc Sale.

Antoine Lepeudry had gone to great lengths to breed the ageing Golden Lily to American Post, in a bid to take advantage of the family’s amazing affinity with the son of Bering. While Golden Lily never saluted the judge, her half-sisters LILISIDE and LILY AMERICA, both by American Post, became Stakes winners and ROBIN OF NAVAN, by American Post out of another half-sister, won the Criterium de Saint-Cloud and two more Pattern races.

However, after several years at Haras d’Etreham, the former Poule d’Essai des Poulains scorer had somewhat gone out of fashion and been sold to Haras de Treban in central France. It thus took a long drive on the lorry to produce lot 436, as well as a bit of luck for American Post died accidentally only a few weeks after conceiving the filly.

Such efforts were rewarded when Marc-Antoine Berghgracht, Eric Puerari and Philippe Decouz locked horns around the ring until the latter emerged victorious with a bid of €230,000 on behalf of World Cup winning footballer Antoine Griezmann. “She is a very racy filly with great limbs and a bit of stretch, and obviously the family has worked tremendously with American Post”, commented the Lyon-based handler. Decouz notably trained Griezmann’s TORNIBUSH, another October Yearling Sale graduate, to win the Prix du Pin a few weeks ago thus becoming the footballer’s first Group winner.
