Goffs Land Rover Sale recorded four Grade 1 wins in just five days, with Altior’s Grade 1 Celebration Chase victory on Saturday coming hot on the heels of a remarkable week at Punchestown where Faugheen, Tornado Flyer and The Storyteller all enjoyed top level success.
ALTIOR put in an amazing performance to take the Grade 1 Celebration Chase for Nicky Henderson and Mrs Patricia Pugh, a race he won the previous year. This was Altior’s eight consecutive Grade 1 win and he remains unbeaten over fences. The 2018 Queen Mother Champion Chase winner was sold by Kilmoney Cottage Stud at the 2013 Land Rover Sale where he was purchased by Highflyer Bloodstock for €60,000.
Having been the leading store sale for Grade 1 winners at this year’s Cheltenham Festival for a fifth successive year, it was a similar story at Punchestown with the Land Rover once again coming out on top. There were many highlights throughout the week for Goffs’ flagship National Hunt Sale, but none more so than seeing FAUGHEEN back to winning ways as he landed the Grade 1 Ladbrokes Champion Stayers Hurdle on Thursday. This was Faugheen’s ninth Grade 1 win and second this season for Willie Mullins and Mrs Susannah Ricci. The former Champion Hurdle star Faugheen was sold at the 2011 Land Rover Sale by Castletown House to Meadowview Stables for €12,000.
The first Grade 1 win at the Punchestown Festival came during in the Grade 1 Growise Champion Novice Chase when THE STORYTELLER seized his chance for Gordon Elliott and Mrs P Sloan. A winner this year at Cheltenham, The Storyteller was sold at the Land Rover Sale in 2014 by White Horse Stud to Kevin Ross Bloodstock for €67,000.
Excitement followed on the next day when TORNADO FLYER won the Grade 1 Champion INH Flat Race on his third start for Willie Mullins and the T F P Partnership. Tornado Flyer was previously Grade 1 placed during the Cheltenham Festival and is a dual Goffs graduate having been sold by Grange Stud to Gerry Hogan Bloodstock for €30,000 at the December NH Sale and resold by Pine Tree Stud to Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock for €63,000 at the Land Rover Sale in 2016.
