The British thoroughbred breeding industry enjoyed a fantastic Group 1 double in France today as Wuheida and National Defense carried off the two juvenile races on the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe card at Chantilly.
Wuheida, a daughter of Dubawi and the Group 1-winning Singspiel mare, Hibaayeb, is trained in Newmarket, England, by Charlie Appleby. Owned and bred by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum under the banner of Godolphin and Darley, she was three-quarters of a length too strong for her rivals in the Group 1 Total Prix Marcel Boussac.
And, just 35 minutes later, National Defense made every yard of the running before storming home four and a half lengths clear in the Group 1 Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere. Trained in France for owners Sun Bloodstock by Criquette Head-Maarek, National Defense is a son of Invincible Spirit and the Kingmambo mare, Angel Falls.
