Dai Walters still harbours hopes Whisper can reach the very top over fences after his fine performance at Cheltenham.

A Grade One winner over hurdles, his first foray over fences did not go to plan in January 2015 at Exeter and last season he was back over timber.

He never threatened to reach the same heights as before but he showed all his old verve on Saturday, beating a classy field in barely coming off the bridle.

It represented a good start on the big stage to the riding agreement Walters has with former Irish champion jockey Davy Russell.

“I think some spring grass did him a lot of good and I was delighted with him. Hopefully he’s on the way back now,” said Walters.

“We said we’d wait a week and see how he is (before deciding on plans), but he won’t be going back over hurdles. He’ll stick to chasing now.

“He’ll win a Gold Cup yet!”
