En-route to Melbourne, Ryan Moore struck gold again in Japan as he rode Maurice to victory in the Tenno Sho (Autumn) in Tokyo.
The pair had struck up a formidable partnership in late 2015, with victories in the Kyoto Mile Championship and the Hong Kong Mile, but the horse had been beaten in recent starts and had to overcome doubts about his stamina in this 10-furlong contest.
A Shin Hikari took the field along, but on the final bend he was engulfed by the field, with Maurice in a prominent position towards the outside, coming through to take over.
At the line the five year old was 1 ½ lengths clear of the Dubai Turf winner Real Steel.
Moore said: “He’s a very good horse, he’s strong at a mile and very hard to beat.
“He’s very strong, he’s got a good turn of foot and he was dominant.
“He couldn’t have been more impressive. He has a big heart, big lungs and at a mile he could go further so we weren’t too concerned about the distance.”
