New attendance record for Open Meeting

Sunday’s crowd of 15,845 enabled Cheltenham Racecourse to have a new record overall attendance for the three days of The Open of 73,752.

The previous highest total came to 71,640 in 2014, while 71,336 attended in 2013 and 70,551 in 2012.

Ian Renton, Regional Director of Jockey Club Racecourses South West, commented: “We are delighted with the crowds we have had over the three days of The Open.

“The over-2,000 increase on Friday, Countryside Day, provided a new record attendance of 22,071 for the first day, which was particularly pleasing.

“There was also a record crowd yesterday of 35,836 on Paddy Power Gold Cup Day.

“Racegoers have enjoyed engrossing racing on all three days and today we all witnessed a stunning return from Sprinter Sacre.”
