The 2014 Melbourne Cup winner Protections is to take up stallion duties at Gestut Rottgen in Germany for the 2017 breeding season at a fee of €6,500.

Originally trained by Andreas Wohler, Protectionist won a Listed Derby Trial at Bremen, abut really blossomed as a four year old with victories in the Group 2 Hansa-Preis and the Group 2 Prix Kergorlay.

He then headed to Australia and defeated Red Cadeaux in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup.

Protectionist stayed in Australia and was trained by Kris Lees but he returned to Wohler’s care earlier this year and won three races including the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Berlin in August.
