French trainer Freddy Head has a high opinion of his unbeaten Group 3 winner, Alrahma, one of a massive 256-strong initial entry unveiled today for the four main juvenile events run at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile Racecourse during the three-day Cambridgeshire meeting, Thursday, 22nd September to Saturday, 24th September.

The winner of both her career starts, including when overcoming a rushed preparation to land the Group 3 Prix de Cabourg at Deauville ten days ago, Alrahma is one of 47 entries for the £180,000 Connolly’s RED MILLS Cheveley Park Stakes, a six furlong fillies’ event run on Cambridgeshire Day, Saturday, 24th September.

Head revealed after the Cabourg that the daughter of Shamardal was still some way off her peak as she had only just had time to recover from a bout of coughing.

She is part of a strong overseas entry which also includes the Irish-trained Roly Poly, successful in the Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket’s Adnams July Course on her latest start, and the American flying machine Lady Aurelia, runaway winner of the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Another Cambridgeshire Day highlight is the Group 1 £180,000 Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes for two-year-old colts over six furlongs.

This has attracted 49 entries including the top rated juvenile of the season so far, the Group 2 Coventry Stakes hero, Caravaggio, who took his perfect record to four-from-four with a wide margin triumph in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at The Curragh on Sunday.

Caravaggio’s potential rivals are headed by his closest pursuer from the Coventry (and subsequent dual Group 2 winner),  Mehmas, plus Tis Marvellous, himself already successful at Group 2 level having plundered the Prix Robert Papin at Maisons-Laffitte.

Aidan O’Brien, trainer of both Roly Poly and Caravaggio, dominates the entry for the third and final big Cambridgeshire Day two-year-old contest, the one mile £100,000 Group 2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes. O’Brien has won this showpiece event on five occasions and is responsible for no less than 19 of its 85 entries.

The juvenile feature on Friday, 23rd September is the Group 2 £100,000 Shadwell Rockfel Stakes for fillies over seven furlongs. The Roger Charlton-trained Frankel progeny, Fair Eva, an impressive winner of the Group 3 Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot last month, stands out among the 75 entries here and is also engaged in the following day’s Connolly’s RED MILLS Cheveley Park Stakes.

Freddy Head, trainer of Alrahma, said:

“Alrahma has run twice and won twice and there is absolutely every chance that she will take part in the Connolly’s RED MILLS Cheveley Park Stakes.”

“I think that she is a very good filly and she is improving all the time. She was still not at the top of her game last time but every day she is getting better and better.”

“I cannot see why there would be any problem for her at Newmarket, the six furlongs and uphill finish should be fine. She is a very easy filly who can do anything.”

“Before then I am going to run her in the Prix Morny [at Deauville on 21st August] and I am not afraid of anybody there or in Newmarket.”

”Alrahma is smallish but she is powerful and very good in her mind. I trained her dam, Albaraah, who was not at all precocious but won a nine furlong Listed race at the end of her three year-old season.”

“Alrahma undoubtedly has much more speed than her mother so, although there is plenty of stamina in her pedigree, I am happy to keep her at six furlongs for the moment.”
