The large-framed Kataniya showed plenty of gut to repel all-comers and win the Group 3 Prix De Royaumont – RMC over 1 ½ miles at Chantilly this afternoon.
As the gates opened Kataniya drifted right away to the left and the far rail, racing in isolation, while Ame Bleue led the main group of runners from Moi Meme who raced keenly.
Kataniya moved back across to join her rivals and set the pace with her ears pricked from Ame Bleue, Moi Meme and Lady Of Kyushu as the field began to turn for home.
Kataniya reached the half mile pole still in front but in behind, there were plenty of runners poised to deliver their runs.
With 1 ½ furlongs to race Kataniya kicked and Sea Calisi burst out of the pack to deliver a challenge, the pair having the race to themselves. But Kataniya stuck to her task well and found enough to hold off Sea Calisi’s late lunge at the line. Ame Bleue came third, ahead of Bella Donna Borget.
Kataniya, a daughter of Raven’s Pass, was completing a hat-trick of victories and saw out this trip well in the rain-softened ground. Trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre may well be considering long-term Group 1 targets at Deauville and Longchamp for the Aga Khan filly.
