Fascinating Rock again showed that he loves to get his toe in, as he avenged his recent defeat by Found and a narrow reverse in this race a year ago, to win the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh today.
With the two British-based runners The Grey Gatsby and Time Test both ruled out by the ground, a field of six went to post for this battle of the older horses.
Success Days quickly moved to the front and led by a couple of lengths from Fascinating Rock and Hot Sauce.
Racing towards the home turn, Success Days, enjoying the give in the ground, continued to lead, with Bocca Baciata moving closer to the inside and then Fascinating Rock.
The leader swept around the bend and plotted a lone course towards the stands side, while Fascinating Rock took it up on the far rail and was chased by Found.
However, with give in the ground, Fascinating Rock, a close and somewhat unlucky second in this race a year ago, bound clear of Found for an impressive victory.
Found, rather like Minding earlier in the afternoon, was perhaps unable to pick up in the conditions, while Success Days came third, with Bocca Baciata fourth.
The Dermot Weld trained 5 year old has entries in races like the Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes and the Coral Eclipse Stakes.
Winning jockey Pat Smullen said: ” He’s a very good horse. We were always confident he was going to improve for his last run.
“We were very pleased with his work heading into the race.
“He’s a horse who is only maturing now, but he’s a horse who needs ease in the ground.
“We prayed for rain and got it.”
