The European trained runners were out of luck in the opening Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf over a mile, but Frankie Dettori was victorious with a perfectly timed run aboard Hootenanny.
As the gates flew open Luck Of The Kitten bounded into the lead with Lawn Ranger and Hootenanny prominent ahead of Wet Sail on the very inside.
But Luck Of The Kitten shot clear of Lawn Ranger by several lengths as they raced down the back stretch.
As the field began to turn for home Lawn Ranger closed but into the straight it was Hootenanny and Dettori who came charging down the outside and got up to beat his fellow Wesley Ward stable mate Luck Of The Kitten, with Daddy D T third ahead of Conquest Tycoon.
The winner had proved brilliant over shorter distances, particularly when winning the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot over 5 furlongs. Racing in the Derrick Smith colours, he has now proved he stays a Classic distance.
Dettori, recording his third victory in this race to become its most successful jockey, said: “He didn’t corner very well but once he got into the stretch he flew.”
