Ben Pauling is tempted to step A Hare Breath up in class for the Sky Bet Lightning Novices’ Chase at Doncaster.

The Grade Two event on January 28 is one of two races being considered for the nine-year-old, who made a successful start to his chasing career at Bangor last month.

Pauling said: “He has been given a mark of 147 over fences after his first run, which rules him out of a lot of handicaps. There is a race at Leicester on the 24th for him or there is the Lightning at Doncaster. He would run in one of those. Off 147 he should be competitive in the Lightning, as long as Min or Altior don’t turn up.”

A Hare Breath received quotes for the Arkle following his Bangor success, but the Bourton-on-the-Water handler may swerve an outing in that Grade One in favour of stepping him up in trip at Aintree the following month.

Pauling said: “The novice chase division looks an exceptionally hot one this year.

“He could quite easily turn up at Cheltenham in the Arkle for a place but he is unlikely to be beating Altior or Min.

“I think he will get two and a half in time and we could look at the two-and-a-half-mile Grade One novice at Aintree (Manifesto), but it all depends what the owners want.”
