Amy Murphy’s fabulous start to her training career continued at Sandown Park on Saturday, when Mercian Prince came with a lung-busting effort to collar Gores Island in the 32Red Handicap Chase.

All Together and Gores Island settled down to fight out the finish rounding the home turn and it was the latter, an 11 year old, who went on at the last fence.

Gores Island touched down in front under William Clarke, but Mercian Prince and Jack Quinlan began to close on the inside.

The six year old continued to build momentum on the hill and got up with plenty to spare.

Amy Murphy only started her training career in late autumn and this was her seventh success.

Mercian Prince races in the same Paul Murphy silks carried to recent Listed success by the mare Kalane at Doncaster.
